Top or Bottom? Which Floor Should You Live On

There are a number of considerations when renting an apartment — budget, location, amenities, to name a few — that renters grapple with during the apartment hunt. But after choosing that perfect home, the next step is often picking the unit and floor you want to live.

So which apartment would you prefer to live on: top or bottom? Here’s a quick overview of the pros and cons.

Living on the Top Floor

Upper floor apartments usually afford a better view and rarely include noise from outside the building. Another unique advantage is that top floor units don’t have to contend with upstairs neighborhoods — and their foot traffic.

The premium, of course, is not always cheap. Most apartments in Denver upcharge units as they move up in floor. In other words, the higher the floor the higher the price even for the same floor plans.

Living on the Bottom Floor

Conversely, a lower floor unit is typically cheaper. Another advantage of a lower floor apartment is the convenience of a walk-in unit or quick trip up the stairs. This is particularly advantageous if living in a walk-up.

A renter may also choose to live in a lower unit if they have a dog. Walking a pet a few times a day adds up, and a lower unit can be a nice time-saver for you and your pup.

On the flip side, there are some potential downsides to living on a lower level. If your windows or entrance are street level, that could leave an apartment dweller feeling a little vulnerable with passersby just a few feet away. Also, sometimes the noise level is louder when a renter is closer to traffic or the building’s entry and exit points.
