Easy Apartment Decorating Tips

Making an apartment a home takes work, but it doesn’t have to be hard. All it takes is a little ingenuity and some easy decorating tips. Here’s how to update your unit without losing your security deposit:

Use Neutrals to Your Advantage

Think white space is dull and unimaginative? Think again. White walls and white furniture are the perfect starting point for bursts of color. For a modern look, keep furniture and decorations in a complimentary tone like taupe, grey, or cream.

For something more lively, add bright colors using throw pillows, drapes, and accent pieces.

Whichever way you decide to go, embrace the neutrals! They are always in style.

Try 3M and Command Strips

Just because you can’t paint a wall doesn’t mean you can’t add color to it. Aside from hanging pictures or canvas, utilize 3M tape or command strips to hang fabrics, wall paper, or wall decals.

Not only will it add color and visual interest, these handy and easy strips are completely removable. No more sticky glue for wall paper or holes in the wall for hanging art. Get creative!

Add Some Green

Plants give a sense of warmth and life to a space. Use plants to fill empty corners or on tabletops to add a sense of interest. I use herbs and wheat grass in windowsills to brighten up the space, add color, and make delicious meals! Form and function.

If you are new to live plants, try out one or two you like and see how it goes. It may take a bit of time to find what works best for your lighting or really sets off your space.

Ask about Accent Wall Colors

Many new apartment buildings allow renters to have one colored accent wall (sometimes for free!) as long as they are willing to paint it white when they leave. Although not always available, this option is fast becoming the norm for new Denver communities. Always check with a landlord or leasing office first, but you may be surprised.
